After the devastating floods of 1993, anxious homeowners, businesses, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and the City leaders of Des Moines and West Des Moines, Iowa, sought a new flood control plan. McClure designed two one-of-a-kind, vertical lift flood control gates spanning two four-lane arterial highways. The gates are designed to close in minutes despite darkness, downpours, power outages or other adverse conditions. The lift gates feature special raising/lowering devices, special water tight seals and nearly perfect matching mechanical parts. High traffic loads forced all detail work and testing off-site. Each of these 80 foot spans successfully met the structural, aesthetic, and operational requirements of the cities and the U. S. Corps of Engineers.
